Whether you have already prepared a list of people who could give you a good reference or are in the process of making one, as a job candidate you must approach the selection of your references carefully and strategically, ensuring they are well-prepared to advocate for you.
For most professionals, the first choice of reference is a former manager, business owner if they were working for a small enterprise or a work colleague who has worked in their team. It is only acceptable to list someone as a reference if they have worked with you professionally and can vouch for your qualifications, skills, work ethic, and character.

Speak to the reference before so they can also be prepared to mention your skills and work details. If you are applying for a senior role where you need to manage a team, your employer may be keen to learn about your leadership style. In that case, you will need to provide a reference of your past and current subordinates. If the focus is on evaluating your strategic skills, they will contact your supervisors. When assessing teamwork, your colleagues or peers would have the best insights.
